EN 16636 is a European standard that outlines the general requirements for providing professional pest management services. Developed by the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations (CEPA), it provides a framework for implementing safe, responsible, and effective methods to prevent and control pests while minimizing risks to health, safety, and the environment.
EN 16636 can be implemented by any company that provides professional pest management services. It is intended for pest control businesses seeking to ensure that their pest management procedures comply with best practices and regulatory requirements.
Implementing a Pest Management System in accordance with EN 16636 involves the following steps:
- Identifying and assessing risks related to the presence of pests
- Developing and applying procedures for the prevention, control, and eradication of pests using safe and environmentally responsible methods
- Employing specialized and trained personnel to carry out pest control procedures
- Incorporating documented methodologies and advanced technologies in pest management
- Continuously monitoring, reviewing, and improving procedures through inspections and internal audits
The difficulty of implementing EN 16636 depends on the size of the company, the nature of its services, and its existing organizational structure. Businesses that already employ quality control or risk management procedures can more easily adapt to the requirements of the standard. Collaborating with specialized consultants can streamline the process and ensure compliance with the standard’s requirements.
Several certification bodies in Greece are accredited by recognized accreditation organizations to issue relevant certificates. The certification process involves evaluating the company’s compliance with its pest management procedures, assessing the Management System under EN 16636 against the standard’s requirements, and reviewing its practical application.
Upon successful completion of the assessment, the Certification Body issues a Certificate of Conformity valid for three years. In the event of significant deviations, corrective actions must be taken by the company before the certificate can be issued. Minor deviations need to be resolved by the next assessment.
The certificate remains valid as long as scheduled periodic evaluations, at least annually, are conducted by the Certification Body to confirm ongoing compliance with the specified requirements.
Companies adopting EN 16636 can enjoy multiple advantages, including:
- Ensuring effectiveness and safety in pest management services, reducing risks to health and the environment
- Complying with regulatory requirements and legislation, ensuring the responsible use of biocides and control methods
- Strengthening the business’s credibility and reputation by demonstrating a commitment to quality and responsible pest management
- Improving relationships with customers and partners by offering services that meet European standards
- Increasing competitiveness in the market, as many businesses require certified pest management services to form partnerships
The time required to develop and certify a Pest Management System depends on the company’s size, the complexity of its services, and staff involvement. For small businesses, it usually ranges from 1 to 3 months.
