Energy Management System

QLC’s ISO 50001 certification consultants answer your questions

ISO 50001 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is an international standard specifying general requirements for establishing, implementing, and continuously improving an Energy Management System. The standard aims to enhance organizations’ energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and comply with regulatory and legislative obligations for sustainable energy resource management.

ISO 50001 applies to all organizations (public or private), regardless of size or industry, that wish to improve energy management and reduce their energy footprint. It is relevant to industrial companies, service providers, commercial firms, public organizations, and any entity aiming to boost energy efficiency and cut operating costs through rational energy use.

Developing an ISO 50001 Energy Management System involves:

  • Documenting and assessing energy consumption and identifying major energy uses within the organization
  • Analyzing potential energy improvements and setting energy performance goals
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures for effective energy management
  • Training staff in optimizing energy efficiency and resource use
  • Continuously monitoring, evaluating, and improving the system via energy performance indicators and internal audits

The complexity of implementing ISO 50001 depends on the company’s size, the scope of its energy activities, and how familiar staff are with energy-saving practices. Businesses with high energy consumption may require more advanced procedures and extensive measures. Collaborating with specialized consultants can streamline the process and ensure proper system deployment.

Numerous certification bodies in Greece are accredited by the Hellenic Accreditation System (ESYD) or equivalent organizations to issue certificates based on a company’s activity. The certification process involves:

  • Evaluating the company’s compliance with its energy management processes
  • Assessing the Energy Management System against the standard’s requirements
  • Reviewing practical implementation

After successfully passing the assessment, the Certification Body issues a three-year Certificate of Conformity. If there are significant nonconformities, corrective actions must be completed before the Certificate can be issued; minor nonconformities need to be resolved by the next assessment.

The certificate remains valid as long as scheduled periodic evaluations (at least once a year) confirm continued compliance with the stated requirements.

Companies adopting ISO 50001 can gain multiple advantages:

  • Improving energy performance and reducing overall energy consumption
  • Lowering operating costs through more efficient use of energy resources
  • Complying with regulatory and legislative requirements related to energy management and environmental protection
  • Enhancing corporate image and sustainability by embracing environmentally friendly practices
  • Shrinking their carbon footprint, supporting environmental protection and climate change mitigation

The time required to develop and certify an Energy Management System depends on the company’s size, types of energy use, existing energy management practices, and staff engagement. For small organizations, it typically ranges from 2 to 4 months.
