SA 8000 is an international standard developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), defining general requirements for creating, implementing, and continuously improving a Social Accountability Management System. This standard focuses on ensuring fair and ethical working conditions, strengthening worker protection, and meeting international labor standards and human rights obligations.

SA 8000 applies to any business or organization, regardless of size or sector, wanting to enhance labor conditions and promote socially responsible practices. It is relevant to manufacturing plants, construction companies, service organizations, retailers, multinational corporations, and others aiming to ensure ethical practices aligned with international labor principles.

Developing a Social Accountability Management System under SA 8000 includes:

  2. Creating policies and procedures to eliminate child labor, forced labor, and discrimination in the workplace.

After successfully passing the evaluation, the Certification Body issues a three-year Certificate of Conformity. For significant deviations, corrective actions must be completed before certification; minor issues must be resolved by the next audit. The certificate remains valid as long as scheduled periodic audits confirm continuing compliance with specified requirements.
