Social Practices Assessment in Agriculture

QLC’s GRASP certification consultants answer your questions

GRASP (GlobalG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice) is an additional module of GlobalG.A.P. developed to assess social practices in agricultural operations. GRASP focuses on safeguarding workers’ rights, workplace conditions, and compliance with social legislation, strengthening transparency and accountability in farming businesses.

GRASP targets producers and agricultural enterprises already using the GlobalG.A.P. standard and wishing to demonstrate their commitment to social and labor practices. It is crucial for businesses exporting agricultural products, as many markets and retailers mandate GRASP assessments for collaboration.

The GRASP assessment is conducted as an optional add-on during GlobalG.A.P. inspections and includes:

  1. Analyzing the company’s social policies, emphasizing human resource management.
  2. Reviewing compliance with labor laws, including wages, working hours, and collective rights.
  3. Examining recruitment and employee management procedures to prevent child or forced labor.
  4. Securing workers’ rights via consultation mechanisms and complaint records.
  5. Assessing hygiene and safety conditions in the workplace and on farms.

The difficulty depends on the company’s compliance with labor laws and existing social policies. Businesses with structured HR processes and adherence to GlobalG.A.P. standards can more easily adapt to GRASP requirements. Preparation through internal reviews, along with help from specialized consultants, can ease the process.

GRASP is not a separate certification but an optional assessment performed alongside the GlobalG.A.P. audit. Businesses that pass receive a compliance report recorded in the GlobalG.A.P. database, accessible to retailers and customers seeking socially responsible producers.

The process:

    1. Preparation and gathering documentation on labor practices and worker management.
    2. GRASP evaluation by an accredited inspector during the GlobalG.A.P. audit.
    3. Assessing compliance, identifying any gaps or improvements needed.
    4. Issuing a compliance report accessible to interested buyers and traders.

Companies implementing GRASP gain multiple advantages:

  • Strengthening social responsibility and transparency by proving commitment to fair labor practices
  • Complying with international labor standards and social requirements demanded by major retail chains
  • Improving working conditions and relationships with employees, fostering a safer and more productive environment
  • Achieving a competitive edge in the market, as companies with a positive GRASP rating have more international partnership opportunities
  • Preserving corporate reputation and credibility by demonstrating adherence to ethical and socially responsible practices

The GRASP assessment occurs alongside GlobalG.A.P. inspections, so timing depends on how prepared the business is and how promptly it can provide required documents. Preparation may take a few weeks, with final evaluation done during the GlobalG.A.P. audit.
