FSSC 22000 Version 7: The New Food Safety Certification Scheme

FSSC 22000 Version 7 introduces significant changes to the food safety certification scheme, affecting businesses operating across the entire food supply chain. The new version of this internationally recognized certification scheme introduces updates related to documentation, prerequisite programmes and the overall operation of food safety management systems.

Version 7 was published in May 2026, marking the next evolution of one of the world’s most widely recognized food safety certification schemes.

What is FSSC 22000?

FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) is an internationally recognized food safety management system certification scheme endorsed by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). It is based on ISO 22000, the applicable prerequisite programmes (PRPs) for each industry category, and the additional requirements established by the FSSC Foundation.

The value of the scheme extends beyond obtaining a certificate. FSSC 22000 provides a structured framework for the systematic identification, assessment and control of food safety hazards, enhancing process consistency, customer confidence and access to demanding markets and supply chains.

What Changes Does FSSC 22000 Version 7 Introduce?

The FSSC Foundation published FSSC 22000 Version 7 in May 2026 to align the scheme with the evolving needs of the food industry and the latest GFSI requirements. The changes focus on improving clarity, applicability and consistency across the certification framework.

The key changes include:

  • Integration of the new ISO 22002-x:2025 series for prerequisite programmes.
  • Alignment with the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements v2024.
  • Strengthened requirements supporting organizations’ contribution to sustainability objectives.
  • Greater clarity regarding food chain categories and scope definitions.
  • Additional improvements introduced through the continuous review and enhancement of the scheme.

The new version requires organizations to thoroughly review their existing food safety management systems, documentation and the effectiveness of their operational processes.

Transition Timeline

The transition to Version 7 follows a defined timeline and requires early preparation by certified organizations.

Audits against FSSC 22000 Version 6 may be conducted until 30 April 2027. Upgrade audits to FSSC 22000 Version 7 will take place between 1 May 2027 and 30 April 2028.

For already certified organizations, this period is critical for identifying changes, assessing gaps, updating documentation where necessary and preparing the relevant teams before the upgrade audit.

What Should Businesses Do?

Transitioning to FSSC 22000 Version 7 requires a structured approach that includes:

  • Assessing the new requirements against the existing management system.
  • Reviewing prerequisite programmes.
  • Updating procedures and documentation where necessary.
  • Training the food safety team and relevant personnel.
  • Verifying the effective implementation of the new requirements before the transition audit.

Early preparation reduces the risk of nonconformities during the audit process and facilitates a smooth transition to the new version.
