The Kalavryta Cooperative completed the calculation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions for the 2019 baseline year for its dairy production facility in Skepasto, Kalavryta, in accordance with the requirements of Article 19 of the Greek National Climate Law (Law 4936/2022).
The project was completed with the issuance of a verification report by an accredited verification body, confirming the completeness of the documentation, as well as the reliability and comparability of the emissions data.
The Kalavryta Cooperative is one of the most historic and dynamic cooperatives in Greece, with a strong presence in the dairy sector and a significant contribution to local production and the regional economy. Its continuous investment in quality, modernization and sustainable development steadily strengthens the Cooperative’s environmental strategy and overall organizational evolution.
Article 19 of the Greek Climate Law
Article 19 of Law 4936/2022 establishes obligations for specific facilities with the objective of systematically monitoring, documenting, verifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Obligated organizations are required to quantify their emissions, document emission sources and activity data, develop an Emissions Reduction Plan and ensure verification of the relevant data by an accredited verification body.
This process establishes the foundation for targeted emissions reduction actions up to 2030 and for the integration of climate-related considerations into the operation of the facility.
In this context, compliance with Article 19 represents not only a regulatory obligation, but also a strategic tool for adapting to sustainability, ESG and environmental management requirements, strengthening transparency, reliability and long-term environmental performance.
Emissions Calculation, Verification and QLC’s Contribution
QLC – Quality Lean Center’s Certification Consultants supported the Kalavryta Agricultural Dairy Cooperative throughout all stages of the emissions calculation and verification process, in line with the requirements of Article 19 of the Greek National Climate Law.
The project included the collection and evaluation of environmental and operational data, the identification and documentation of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission sources, uncertainty assessment, greenhouse gas emissions quantification for the 2019 baseline year, development of the Emissions Reduction Plan and preparation for third-party verification by an accredited body.
To ensure documented compliance with Article 19 requirements, the emissions inventory and quantification process was carried out according to the principles and requirements of ISO 14064-1. The completion of the process for the 2019 baseline year established the reference point for defining the Dairy Facility’s emissions reduction plan, monitoring progress and documenting long-term compliance.
QLC’s contribution focused on methodological guidance, technical documentation and preparation of the verification process, ensuring that the requirements of Article 19 were implemented with clarity, completeness and practical applicability within the facility’s operations.
Compliance, Sustainability and Strategic Development
Greenhouse gas emissions verification constitutes an essential step towards documented compliance with regulatory requirements and the systematic monitoring of environmental performance. For obligated facilities, reliable emissions quantification establishes the foundation for targeted decision-making, emissions reduction actions and stronger preparedness regarding increasing ESG, financing and corporate accountability requirements.
At QLC, we support businesses and facilities in the documented monitoring, verification and reduction of emissions, connecting regulatory requirements with practical environmental monitoring, compliance and strategic development actions.
