Strawberry

Developing new strawberry varieties with improved aroma and flavor using chemical and genetic markers

The STRAWBERRY research project aims to develop new strawberry varieties featuring high yield potential, strong profitability for growers, and high consumer appeal. These new varieties will contain high levels of aromatic compounds, low acidity, and satisfactory sugar content. To achieve this, the BERRYPLASMA breeding program will use modern techniques for agronomic, chemical, and molecular evaluation of genotypes, selecting the most suitable ones based on these traits. The findings will be presented at conferences, trade shows, and in scientific journals.

The project’s main goal is to use BERRYPLASMA’s plant material to produce genotypes capable of improving future varieties with respect to:

  • Organoleptic characteristics (taste and aroma)
  • Shelf life and post-harvest longevity of the fruit
  • The percentage of marketable fruit
  • Reducing the environmental footprint across the production and distribution chain
